Using running to promote the culture of Beijing’s Central Axis, nearly 80 runners completed the 100-kilometer relay race around the lake
The “Central Axis Four Seasons Run: Hutong Season” along with the “Zhonghu 100” 100-kilometer relay race recently took place at Longtan Zhonghu Park, drawing nearly 80 runners from four different running teams. Participants engaged in a collaborative relay format to complete a 100-kilometer race themed around the promotion of Beijing’s Central Axis.
Each team had its total time calculated, along with the individual running distances of every member. A staff member explained, “In this relay, the baton exchange symbolizes the connection between ancient and modern cultures along Beijing’s Central Axis. It showcases how tradition continues to evolve, taking on new meanings and vibrancy in contemporary times. Additionally, by shortening the distance each person runs, we make long-distance events more accessible, encouraging broader participation.”
This 100-kilometer lake run, as part of the park’s “Vitality Recognition of the Central Axis” sports brand initiative, is supported by the Beijing Central Axis Protection Public Welfare Foundation. In 2024, the event will occur four times throughout different seasons, each focused on cultural visual symbols related to the Central Axis, such as its architectural landmarks, ancient trees, stone tablets, and historical hutongs. The activities will incorporate exhibitions, designated running courses, and quizzes to enhance public knowledge about the Central Axis culture.
Longtan Zhonghu Park previously organized the “Run Along the Central Axis” event, involving over a hundred runners led by professional coaches. This initiative included an online creative running session and checkpoints at various cultural sites along the central line. Notably, 50 runners followed their coach from Yongdingmen, passing by iconic locations like Tiananmen, the Forbidden City, and Jingshan Park, ultimately reaching the Bell Tower in just two hours while experiencing the cultural richness of Beijing.
The park’s representative stated that it will continue to explore a model combining “professional sports events, knowledge promotion, and entertaining athletic challenges,” aiming to foster a vibrant sports culture and promote a quality lifestyle in the future.
