New version of -Wotou Club- published Liu Heng- -Wotou Club- is not only a play

On October 27, a creative sharing session and new book launch for “Wotou Huiguan” took place in Beijing, co-hosted by the Writers Publishing House, Longma Publishing, and the Beijing Tianqiao Art Center.

At the event, renowned author Liu Heng reflected on the creation of “Wotou Huiguan,” one of his classic works set against the backdrop of a modest courtyard in Beijing. The narrative portrays the lives of ordinary people at the bottom of society, vividly illustrating their diverse personalities—greed, malice, cowardice, and fortitude—while encapsulating a microcosm of society just before the liberation of Beiping.

“I view ‘Wotou Huiguan’ not just as a play but as a record and reflection of that era,” Liu Heng shared. “Through the stories of these small characters, I hope readers and audiences can feel the warmth of history and the complexities of human nature.” He emphasized the crucial role of the stage and the contributions of directors and actors, stating that the written word truly comes to life only when performed.

Liu Heng also engaged in a discussion with Bao Jian, president of the Writers Publishing House, and Yao Yi, chairman of Longma Publishing, about the new forms of publishing that combine drama and literature. Bao detailed the publication journey of “Wotou Huiguan,” highlighting that it not only continues a classic but also invites new readers into Liu Heng’s world to experience the shifting fates of ordinary people. “This work embodies a deep humanistic concern; it reflects history while also touching on the essence of humanity. We aim to showcase the power of literature through this book.”

Yao Yi noted that the blend of “Literature + Script” has given their theatrical productions a unique flavor. “The foundation laid by our mentors allows us the confidence and fortune to create these pieces. Everything else is just the icing on the cake,” she explained.

Zhang Guoli, the director of the Longma Publishing version of “Wotou Huiguan,” emphasized their commitment to respecting Liu Heng’s literary original while aiming to enrich the emotional expressions of each character through dramatic performance.

During the sharing session, cast members also took the stage to share their insights about “Wotou Huiguan” and their respective roles. The actors expressed that each character carries a unique story and emotions, and throughout the rehearsal process, they deeply resonated with the struggles and resilience of these ordinary individuals against the backdrop of significant historical events, vividly bringing that era’s life back to the stage.
