Insights into the environmental improvement of small towns on the banks of the Yellow River in Qinghai- Townships compete in the arena and people work together to manage the environment
On October 8, 2023, in Guider, a charming town nestled along the Yellow River in Qinghai Province, a remarkable community effort is transforming the local environment, emphasizing cleanliness and active participation from residents. This picturesque region, celebrated for its natural beauty, has become a shining example of environmental stewardship.
As I entered the point redemption market of the Nan Hai community, I was immediately taken aback by the neatly displayed everyday items and school supplies. Nearby, a table featured a list documenting the stories of residents who exchanged their hard-earned points for goods, each entry underscoring their commitment to maintaining a clean environment.
Ma Lan, a local resident, expressed her passion for community volunteer work. “I’ve been a part of the volunteer service team for three years now, and it brings me so much joy to see our city clean and tidy,” she shared. “I participate in activities like environmental cleanups and tree planting, and sometimes I help my neighbors by cleaning their windows. Every cleaning session earns me points, and I’m saving up to redeem something big at the end of the year.”
Wang Zhanjun, the party branch secretary of the Nan Hai community, explained that the environmental service team began with just a few low-income members and has now expanded to include dozens. The point redemption store serves as a powerful incentive for community members to contribute their efforts.
The formerly run-down buildings surrounding the community have been revitalized, featuring carefully landscaped greenery throughout the neighborhood. Previously overlooked corners have been transformed into vibrant recreational areas where seniors bask in the sun while children play.
“Every Friday, our county organizes a major cleanup effort. The walking paths that once only had dirt benches now feature clean seating areas where people gather to relax and chat,” Wang elaborated. “Our previously unmanaged areas have received a fresh makeover.”
In recent years, Guider County has witnessed a shift from simply posting slogans to encouraging active participation as villages join forces to tackle waste and improve green spaces. Local government and community groups are engaged in a spirited competition to elevate both residential and environmental cleanliness.
The county has also initiated significant projects to upgrade sewage systems and to separate rainwater from wastewater, achieving an impressive 100% waste collection coverage rate and a 95.63% rate for waste harmless treatment.
Exploring Gongba Village, a small settlement along the Yellow River in the southeastern part of the county, I observed substantial improvements. The previously muddy roads have been replaced with smooth, wide asphalt paths adorned with flowering plants. Areas once filled with trash are now clear, with well-maintained garbage bins receiving regular service.
Village homes are thriving, featuring gardens brimming with flowers and vegetables, while a small square is equipped with fitness gear for communal use. Villager Duojie highlighted a refreshing change in the community’s mindset. “People are no longer just focused on their immediate surroundings or considering cleaning a chore. Now, on a designated day each week, anyone available brings tools to work together and tidy up,” he explained.
The transformation of these landscapes into consistent sources of beauty reflects the ongoing community initiatives. “We organized local residents to care for the trees along Changmu Road, giving over 2,000 trees protective ‘new outfits’ to shield them from winter damage and pest problems,” stated Cai Langdong, deputy secretary of the Hebei Township Party Committee. “The improvements in our living environment are truly apparent and advantageous for everyone.”
These tree conservation efforts encapsulate Guider County’s commitment to enhancing living conditions. Since 2014, the county has invested significantly in rural road infrastructure, constructing 2,322.95 kilometers of upgraded roads.
In both the bustling county and its tranquil villages, the community is uniting to maintain and expand their environmental improvements, ensuring the beauty of Guider endures for years to come.
