Recently, the Guangzhou Center for Disease Control and Prevention announced a significant rise in dengue fever cases within the city. Between October 14 and October 20, there were 497 newly reported cases, an increase of 60 when compared to the previous week’s total of 437, marking a 13.73% rise.
Breaking down the statistics, a majority of the cases—431—were local infections. The districts with the highest numbers included Baiyun with 136 cases, Panyu with 85, Liwan with 63, and Yuexiu with 37. Other districts like Huadu, Tianhe, Haizhu, Zengcheng, Nansha, and Conghua reported lower numbers, while Huangpu had just one case.
Additionally, there were 66 reported imported cases, with 60 of those coming from other cities within the province. The Haizhu district accounted for 32 of these cases, followed by Yuexiu with 11 and Zengcheng with 7.
As of October 21, areas including Nancun Town and Zhongcun Street in Panyu, as well as Xinguang Street in Haizhu and Xinhua Street in Huadu, are actively managing the dengue fever outbreak and are currently considered to be at risk of transmission.
Dengue fever, caused by the dengue virus, is an acute infectious disease spread primarily through the bites of Aedes mosquitoes. While the general population is commonly susceptible, there are individuals who may be asymptomatically infected, known as silent carriers.
Prevention strategies highlight the importance of avoiding mosquito bites, with effective control measures focusing on eliminating stagnant water sources, as the absence of standing water is crucial for preventing mosquito breeding.
