Biden calls China an “increasing challenge.” China- Serious misjudgment
During a press briefing on October 8, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning responded to a question about recent comments made by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken. In an article for “Foreign Affairs,” Blinken suggested that China is the only nation capable of reshaping the international system. He also described China as “a growing challenge” and the most significant long-term strategic competitor for the United States.
When asked how China views these statements, Mao Ning stated, “The misconceptions from U.S. officials are nothing new. We have consistently pointed out that great power competition is out of touch with the current era and fails to address the domestic issues the United States faces, as well as the global challenges we all confront. Evaluating the international landscape and framing U.S.-China relations through a strategic competition lens reflects a Cold War mentality. Considering China merely as a long-term strategic competitor and a ‘growing challenge’ demonstrates a serious misjudgment, stemming from projecting America’s own history of hegemony onto others. This perspective does not align with the fundamental interests of both nations’ peoples or the broader expectations of the international community. China has always been a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development, and a guardian of the international order. In fact, it is the U.S. that engages in unfair competition, aggressive actions, displays of power, and coercive tactics—not anyone else.”
