tragedy! Study shows that gun violence on campuses in the United States will cause hundreds of deaths and injuries in 2024

According to a report from various media outlets on October 11, data from the gun safety organization Everytown reveals that the number of gun violence incidents in U.S. schools for 2024 has already surpassed the total for the entire year of 2023.

As of September 30, 2024, the statistics show that there have been at least 163 school shootings in the United States, resulting in approximately 48 deaths and 108 injuries. In comparison, the entire year of 2023 saw 158 school shootings, which led to at least 45 fatalities.

Sarah, a senior research director at Everytown, emphasized in a statement, “It’s crucial to remember that these are not just numbers; they represent lives forever impacted by gun violence in our schools, which should be places where students don’t have to worry about any form of violence.”

One contributing factor to the rising gun violence in American schools may be the ease of accessing firearms. An analysis by the U.S. Secret Service indicated that 76% of school shooters obtained their firearms from their parents or relatives’ homes.

Professor Peterson from Hamline University, an expert in criminology and criminal justice, pointed out that one of the root causes of gun violence in the U.S. is its deeply ingrained gun culture. “There are more guns than there are people here, which means more opportunities for access to them,” he noted. After conducting numerous interviews with perpetrators of gun violence, he found that many mentioned that they first handled firearms around the ages of 8 or 10.

In response to this growing crisis, Paradis, a survivor of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, recently stated, “Students aren’t just asking questions; they are calling for action. We demand that lawmakers clarify their priorities because what’s killing us isn’t books—it’s the guns that are so easily accessible.” The tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut in 2012 resulted in the deaths of over 20 individuals.
